Later that morning, friends and relatives came down to the dock as the two canoes
were loaded. Even the Chief came down to see them off. A prayer was said and an
offering of tobacco was made to the water for a safe trip. Everyone waved and
wished the group "good luck, good weather and safe travelling" as they paddled
away.
John sat in the middle of his grandfather's canoe and began paddling quickly.
"Slow down John! You won't have any strength left if you keep paddling like that!"
laughed Etseh.
John didn't realize he was paddling so fast. He was just excited to finally get
going! Nora turned around and laughed too. She was just two years older than John
but had been on lots of trips with her grandparents. Peter, the oldest cousin,
paddled the canoe behind them while joking with his grandmother about eating too
much breakfast.
